My wife and I started gardening in Fukuoka (Japan) in 2003. There was nothing but muddy clayey sloping land. At the beginning we made several structure such as steps and paths, and planted turf, fruit trees, roses, herbs etc.
In 2010, we visited several famous English gardens, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Mottisfont Abbey Garden and Hidcote Manor Garden. We were shocked by the glory of those gardens. Since then, we have been trying to make small but glorious gardens by ourselves.
FLOWERING PLANTS AWAKENING FROM MIDSUMMER DORMANCY (真夏の休眠から覚めた宿根草たち)
In the shade garden, shaded by the garden room and plum tree, the ground level of the acanthus morris died back in July and went dormant, revealing bare ground.
The Liriope muscari, which were covered by the large leaves of the acanthus, are now producing pretty blue-purple flowers.
The acanthus next to the fountain is already growing large new leaves.
噴水の横のアカンサスは、すでに新しい葉々が大きくなってきています.
Another perennial that goes dormant in mid-summer is the globe artichoke . New shoots are emerging from the base of the thick, dead trunk, and the leaves are growing.
When the above-ground parts die back in mid-summer, I worry a little about whether the shoots will reappear, but I am relieved and happy when I see new shoots.
