Wardian cases were a type of small glass-walled, airtight greenhouse invented in the 19th century by the English doctor Ward, and were of great use in bringing plants back from distant foreign countries by ship. It was also used to grow plants indoors. The ferns that Dr Ward began growing in it were equally lush at the World's Fair in London (1851) 18 years later, and growing ferns in Wardian cases became a huge craze in Britain.
ウォーディアンケースはイギリスのウォード医師が19世紀に発明したガラス張りで気密性の高い一種の小さな温室で、植物を船で遠い外国から持ち帰るのに大いに役立ちました. そして、室内で植物を育てるのにも使われました. ウォード先生がこの中で育て始めたシダが、18年後に開かれたロンドン万国博覧会（1851年）の会場で、同じように青々と茂っているのが話題となり、ウォーディアンケースでシダを育てるのがイギリスで大ブームとなったのです.

After reading about this story, I happened to find a small glass house-shaped case in a storage room that was unused, so I decided to try growing ferns in it. The small size of this case made it impossible to grow normal ferns, so I looked for dwarf ferns and bought seedlings.
I planted three different types of ferns in clear plastic containers and placed them in my 'Wardian case'. Ferns do not like direct sunlight, so I will grow them indoors where they will not be in direct sunlight.
この話を本で知り、たまたま納戸に使わずにおかれていたガラス張りの小さな家形ケースを見つけたので、私もシダを育ててみることにしました. このケースはサイズが小さいため、普通のシダを育てるのは無理なので、矮性のシダを探して、苗を購入しました.
透明のプラスチックの容器に3種類のシダの苗を植え付け、ウォーディアンケースに入れました. シダは直射日光を嫌うので、室内で直接日の当たらない場所で育てていこうと思います.
