Tricyrtis hirta (toad lily)is a hardy perennial that is native to Japan, growing on shaded rocky cliffs and stream banks. The flowers are one inch wide with six whitish to pale purple tetals that have dark purple spots. Its Japanese name 'Hototogisu', that means a lesser cuckoo, is derived from spotted pattern of the bird.
In our garden, many of these flowers bloom every year in the bluebell garden. The season is from late October to November. Growth is vigorous and care should be taken as it tends to spread too far.
