Clematis florida (or 'tessen' in Japanese) is a type of clematis with greenish-white petals (actually the calyxes) that turn pure white when they fully open, contrasting beautifully with the reddish-purple stamens and standing out against the dark green background.
The passion flower is called 'clock flower (tokei-sou)' in Japan because of its resemblance to a clock. The first flower blooms and continues to bloom for some time to come, with the flowers changing in the course of a day. The fruits of some varieties are edible, but not the fruits of this species.
