HALF A CENTURY OF ENCOUNTER WITH WISTERIA FLOWERS (藤の花に出逢って半世紀)

 

　'I saw you today. I saw you in the morning. You smiled at me. I smiled too. And I can't tell you how much it made my heart beat. If I hadn't seen you, it wouldn't have mattered so much, but now that I have, my heart beats faster. I knew I liked you. Oh, that unforgettable smile.'

This is a line from a novel. Wisteria flowers are my favorite, I have been fascinated by this flower for half a century now. This is a text that seems to personify my encounter with wisteria flowers at that time. When I was still in high school, I once rode my bicycle far away to see the Fuji flowers.

During my trip to England, I was impressed by the British way of training wisteria.　We used to grow wisteria in pots at home, but I decided to plant them behind the brick wall to make them bloom gorgeously on the wall. It is still only flowering on the ground and new branches are growing on the brick wall. 

I hope that many wisteria flowers will bloom on the brick wall and I will be able to experience again the excitement of those wisteria flowers that I saw fifty years ago.

　『今日、君に会った。朝、会った。にっこり笑った。僕もにっこりした。そして心がどれだけ弾んだか分かりはしない。会わなければそんなに何ということもないのだけれど、会うともう鼓動が速くなる。やはり僕は君が好きなんだ。ああ、忘れられないあの微笑。』

この文章はある小説の一説です。藤の花は私のお気に入り、この花に魅了されたのはもう半世紀も前でしょうか。当時の私の藤の花との出会いを擬人化したかのような文章です。まだハイスクールの頃、フジの花を見に遠くまで自転車に乗っていったことがありました。

英国旅行では英国流の藤の仕立て方をみて感銘を受けました。うちではフジを鉢植えで育てていましたが、レンガ塀の上で華やかに咲かせようと思って、レンガ塀の裏に植え付けました。今はまだ地際で咲いているだけですが、新しい枝がレンガ塀の上で伸びてきています。

たくさんの藤の花がレンガ塀の上で咲いて、あの五十年前に見た藤の花の感動をまた経験できることを祈っています。
