ARTICHOKE & ARTICHOKE (二つのアーティチョーク)

 

 I have two kinds of artichokes growing in my garden. 

One is Jerusalem artichoke, or sunchoke. It's a kind of potato whose main ingredient is inulin. It is a vegetable that is gaining some popularity, also known as natural insulin. 

Right now, the grass is still about two feet tall, but it will grow to about 10 feet by summer. In autumn, it bears small yellow flowers similar to sunflowers. This plant is a member of the sunflower family. It can be harvested in autumn.

庭では二種類のアーティチョークを育てています.

ひとつは、エルサレムアーティチョーク、別名キクイモです. イヌリンが主成分の一種の芋で、自然のインスリンとも呼ばれて人気がでてきています. 

今はまだ草丈は60センチほどですが、夏ごろまでには3メートルぐらいまで育ちます. 秋にはひまわりに似た小さな黄色い花をつけます. この植物はひまわりの仲間です. 秋には収穫できるようになります.

The other is globe artichoke. It is a kind of vegetable, and its large flower buds that resemble thistles can be eaten. It already has a small bud on the tip. When they are about three inches in diameter, harvest the buds and boil them in salted water to eat. Only a small part of the buds can be eaten, but they have a unique taste, like bamboo shoots or broad beans.

もう一方はグローブアーティチョークです. アザミに似た大きな花の蕾を食べる一種の野菜です. すでに先端に小さな蕾をつけています. 直径が3インチほどになったら蕾を収穫して、塩ゆでして食べます. 食べられる部分は一部分だけですが、タケノコのような、あるいはそら豆のような、独特の味があります.

We also have globe artichokes growing in the bluebell garden above the hydrangeas, and there are two varieties with some buds on them. 

ブルーベルの庭にもアジサイの上の方にグローブアーティチョークを育てています. 2品種あり、いくつか蕾をつけています.
